Ramesh Gopal, MD, PhD was trained as a physician and scientist in India and the United States. He has been fascinated with Roman history since he read Colleen McCullough’s Masters of Rome series in the 1990s and sees parallels between classical antiquity and the present. Understanding what comes next requires a knowledge of how we arrived here. Ramesh is particularly interested in how civilizations rise and then dissolve, and what that means for our own time. Historical fiction should transport modern readers into the world of the story, make the bygone real, illuminate unexpected perspectives, challenge beliefs, and inspire appreciation of the achievements of our ancestors. It can be credible only to the extent that an audience in the time in which it is set would itself find it authentic.
